Curtis family collection, 1850s-1980s.

Genealogical materials reflecting Curtis, Chase, Colson, and Munson family relationships; photographs; tax records and business documents (1870s) of Captain Frank Curtis as well as reports of Frank Curtis as master of the S.S. Columbian when it was captured and sunk by a German submarine in 1916; composition book (1845-1870) used as an account book by Horatio N. Curtis pertaining to the building of the schooner William (1845) and composition books and time record for the schooner G.W. Pickering, out of Searsport (1847); tax receipts and business records of Eben Curtis; and papers of Rear Adm. Lebbeus Curtis (1880-1964), including Curtis genealogy for seven generations in Prospect and Searsport. Also significant in the collection are the papers of Lebbeus Curtis II (1816-1880) with biographical materials, correspondence, accounts, and business records reflecting his business relationship with R.P. Buck & Co., including information concerning the ships Chandos, Free Trade, Mary Goodell, and E.D. Peters, barks R.P. Buck, Robert Porter, and John Wesley, and other vessels, reflecting details on freight in various ports, cargos, yellow fever, ship repair, etc., and including correspondence with other ship captains, written from various ports such as Boston, New York, New Orleans, Key West, Montevideo, Havana, or San Francisco. Also includes letters from Capt. Robert Porter written to Lebbeus Curtis in Searsport, from Callao, Valencia, and other locations; and correspondence between Curtis and S.B. Swazey & Co. in Bucksport, Me., relating to cargo, the dangerous political situation in the 1860s (Civil War), and the sale of the ship E.D. Peters. Other correspondents of Lebbeus Curtis include Capt. Samuel Patten, master of bark John Wesley; William McGilvery, reflecting Searsport news, investments, and freight transactions; E.S. Linnell, Carmel, Me., relating to the school district of which the captain was an official and the possibility of a teaching job for Linnell; and Levi L. Curtis, brother of Lebbeus Curtis.
